Tips To Catch The Attention Of Top Education Executive Search Firms

By Linda Graham

Learning institutions hire their executives through a unique vetting process. This is because of the sensitivity of the position and the character of persons required to fill them. The approach of education executive search firms is different from human resource departments in most organizations. To capture their attention, you must be outstanding in your application. How is this achieved?

The first encounter recruiters have with you is through the resume. Many applicants download templates and assume that their credentials will plead their case. This enters them into a dizzying pool where everything looks similar. It is difficult for the vetting panel to differentiate one applicant from the other. To escape this trap, use a unique format that stands out and remains formal.

The vetting panel looks for very specific qualification details. They want to get straight to the point without having to search allover your papers to trace the details. Provide compelling and descriptive titles for each section. The titles enable a person to capture your details at a glance. These titles carry a lot of information and have a lot of impact on a reader skimming through thousands of resumes.

Resumes should not be tool long or too short. Though there is no approved length of a resume, it must contain valuable information without being too wordy. Applicants for the same position will have resumes of different lengths. This is because of the uniqueness of qualifications. The secret is to include information that sets you apart from the large pool of applicants.

A narrative about your achievements is welcome. However, the best advocates for your case are quantifiable items. Quantifiable details vary from one position to the other. If you worked as a registrar and grew school enrollment numbers, indicate the percentage in your resume. Where efficiency or reduction in cost was witnessed, indicate the change in real numbers.

There is a level of communication and language mastery required of holders of education executive positions. This understanding and mastery must be displayed in your resume. It entails use of correct tenses, verbs, formatting, bulletin, highlights, etc. The idea is to use words and expressions that reflect the position you are taking. Ambiguous words should be eliminated. Make your resume engaging without losing the formal status required.

Many applicants have resulted to the use of graphics and images in resumes. This level of creativity makes your application catchy until the panel judges it as too casual or cluttered. Unless such details are demanded, avoid using them. Where photos are used, it should be the passport size and one taken in formal setting as well as official attire.

Your resume gives the vetting panel the first impression of who you are. At executive level, the panel is after very specific details. It is also after a quantifiable delivery track record. Provide this information in a formal, understandable and clear manner. A little bit of creativity is required to catch the attention of the vetting panel, but it must not be at the expense of the formality required at that level.
