What You Need To Know When Getting A Place Off Campus

By Dennis Wallace

Most college kids who are so over the novelty of living in campus dormitories may find the options of living outside school premises rather inviting. And although this option still has its fair share of pros and cons, the prospect of finding and residing in an apartment is just too good to pass up. So if you decide to finally make that leap and move out of the dorm and move into a separate housing arrangement, then this handy guide below should address your key concerns.

Everything begins and ends with proper planning and research into finding a suitable residential alternative that fits your student budget. Ideally, you should find a UMN housing off campus that is relatively close to the vicinity of your college to ensure your commute will be short. Look for listings online and note down the contact details of every single candidate you have found.

Consult your shortlist of options and go through all the candidates by visiting each of the places in person. Prior to doing your window shopping excursions, you should inform the landlords of your intentions as a courtesy. Upon your arrival, take a detailed inspection of the apartment space and during the tour, make sure to converse with the landlord on all the rental specifics.

If the apartment is too big and expensive for just one person, then consider the benefits of getting your friends to join you as roommates. This means you get to split the monthly rent with them and thereby lowering your expenses, while also guaranteeing that you have people you know and trust to live with you. This is an ideal situation that you should totally pursue.

Never commit the egregious mistake of signing a lease without understanding the terms and conditions stipulated within the document. Remember that leases are formal papers which are legally binding and if you do something that breaks any clause, then your status as a tenant will be in serious trouble. Make it a point to go through the lease before affixing your signature.

Sometimes, most apartments do not come complete with furniture and are only semi furnished, so rally your housemates for some cheap home shopping. Look for sale items in home depot centers, or even scour garage sales in nearby suburban neighborhoods. As an alternative, you and your friends would expand your hunt for secondhand furniture by searching the internet.

Take matters into your own hands and that of your roommates by preparing your future home away from college before moving in. Inform your landlord that you will have the place thoroughly cleaned so the space will be fit for human habitation. Everyone should agree on a date and time where you shall all rendezvous at the apartment to commence the cleaning job.

Now that you have officially moved into your off campus residence, you should be responsible enough to keep the place in good condition. Have a serious discussion with your fellow housemates on maintaining the cleanliness and agree to set up a regular cleaning schedule where everyone should pitch in. This prevents the place from getting nasty and unsanitary.

Overcoming the challenges of finding a dormitory alternative is easy enough once you know the ways on how to make it happen. Adhering to these useful suggestions will ensure that you will achieve the desired results. Spring forward with confidence and never hesitate to grab any good housing opportunity deals that will land at your feet.
